Diagnostic Laboratory Highlights

Diseases diagnosed on agronomic crops during the past week have included Fusarium ear rot on corn; rough leaf spot, zonate leaf spot and sugarcane aphid on sweet sorghum; black shank and frogeye leaf spot on tobacco.

On fruit and vegetable samples, we have diagnosed Septoria cane and leaf spot on blackberry; cedar-apple rust, sooty blotch/flyspeck, and plum curculio damage on apple; bacterial spot, scab and brown rot on peach; black knot on plum; anthracnose on bean; Pythium root/crown rot on pepper; downy mildew, Microdochium blight, and Phytophthora fruit rot on pumpkin; Rhizoctonia root/stem rot and tomato spotted wilt virus on tomato.

Ornamental and turf samples included Rhizoctonia stem/root rot on petunia; Fusarium wilt on chrysanthemum; black root rot on holly; frogeye leaf spot on crabapple; Actinopelte leaf spot on oak; Phomopsis dieback on spruce; Verticillium wilt on sumac; Cylindrosporium leaf spot on walnut; powdery mildew and summer patch on bluegrass; Pythium blight, Pythium root dysfunction, take-all, and heavy thatch buildup on bentgrass.
