Plant Disease Diagnostic Lab Highlights

The following plant disease highlights from the UK Plant Disease Diagnostic Laboratories represent recent sample submissions from field crops, fruit, vegetables, and ornamentals.

Recent agronomic samples have included tan spot, Septoria and Stagonospora leaf spots on wheat; Pythium root rot, target spot, and Spartan (herbicide) injury on tobacco; and Pythium root rot on hemp.

On fruit and vegetable crops, we have seen anthracnose and black rot on grape; anthracnose and Phomopsis leaf blight on strawberry; cane blight on blackberry; fire blight on apple and pear; Phomopsis leaf spot on fig; leaf curl on peach; bacterial spot on pepper; broad mite injury and tomato spotted wilt virus on tomato; and zinc deficiency on sweet corn.

On ornamentals and turf, we have diagnosed Sclerotinia stem rot on petunia; leaf/flower gall on azalea; anthracnose on maple; Seiridium canker on Leyland cypress; Cytospora canker on willow; dollar spot, take-all, and Pythium root dysfunction on bentgrass; and red thread on fescue.
