The following plant disease highlights from the UK Plant Disease Diagnostic Laboratories represent recent sample submissions from field crops, fruit, vegetables, and ornamentals.
Recent agronomic samples have included wireworm injury on corn; tan spot and compaction on wheat; and Pythium root rot, target spot, and budworm injury on tobacco transplants.
On fruit and vegetable crops, we have seen bacterial leaf spot and Phomopsis leaf blight on strawberry; Sphaerulina leaf spot on raspberry; cedar-apple rust on apple; bacterial leaf spot, bacterial canker, and Leucostoma canker on cherry; Rhizoctonia root rot on cucumber; Pythium root rot, timber rot, Botrytis fruit rot, Rhizoctonia root/stem rot, Fusarium wilt, and tomato spotted wilt virus on tomato.
On ornamentals and turf, we have diagnosed anthracnose and Pythium root rot on lupine; leaf/flower gall on azalea; filbert blight on contorted filbert; anthracnose on maple; leaf curl on plum; fire blight on pear; Phomopsis dieback on oak; Seiridium canker and winter injury on Leyland cypress; Dothistroma needle blight on pine; Stigmina needle blight on spruce; and Pythium root dysfunction and take-all on bentgrass.
