Plant Disease Diagnostic Lab Highlights

The following plant disease highlights from the UK Plant Disease Diagnostic Laboratories represent recent sample submissions from field crops, fruit and vegetables, and ornamentals.

During the past week, field crop diagnoses included northern leaf blight, brown spot, and anthracnose leaf blight on corn; brown spot on soybean; soreshin, black shank, tomato spotted wilt virus, boron deficiency, and manganese toxicity on tobacco.

On fruit and vegetable samples, diagnoses included anthracnose fruit rot on blueberry; frogeye and cedar-apple rust on apple; brown rot on peach; bacterial wilt on cantaloupe and squash; leaf mold, Pythium root rot, and Verticillium wilt on tomato; anthracnose and Phytophthora fruit rot on watermelon.

On ornamentals and turf, we diagnosed Cercospora leaf spot on hydrangea; Volutella canker on boxwood; Botyrosphaeria canker on holly; Cytospora canker on Leyland cypress; Phytophthora root rot on viburnum; and brown patch on fescue.
