Plant Disease Diagnostic Lab Highlights

The following plant disease highlights from the UK Plant Disease Diagnostic Laboratories represent recent sample submissions from field crops, fruit and vegetables, and ornamentals.

During the past week, field crop diagnoses included Lepto leaf spot on alfalfa; holcus spot, magnesium deficiency, and compaction on corn; downy mildew, compaction, and potassium deficiency on soybean; soreshin, black shank, Fusarium wilt, tomato spotted wilt virus, and boron and potassium deficiencies on tobacco.

On fruit and vegetable samples, diagnoses included black rot on grape; fire blight and cedar-apple rust on apple; Alternaria leaf spot on broccoli; bacterial wilt and gummy stem blight on cantaloupe; blossom end rot on pepper; Fusarium root/stem rot on squash; leaf mold, early blight, timber rot, and blossom end rot on tomato.

On ornamentals and turf, we diagnosed Phytophthora blight on annual vinca; Volutella canker on boxwood; scab on crabapple; spot anthracnose on dogwood; bacterial canker and Botyrosphaeria canker on cherry; Seiridium, Botryosphaeria, and Cytospora cankers on Leyland cypress; Verticillium wilt on maple and tuliptree; and take-all, anthracnose, and Pythium root dysfunction on bentgrass.
