Plant Disease Diagnostic Lab Highlights  

The following plant disease highlights from the UK Plant Disease Diagnostic Laboratories represent recent sample submissions from field crops, fruit and vegetables, and ornamentals.

During the past week, field crop diagnoses included potassium deficiency on soybean; Pythium root rot, transplant shock, temporary phosphorus deficiency, and tomato spotted wilt virus on tobacco.

On fruit and vegetable samples, diagnoses included black rot on grape; fire blight on apple; bacterial leaf spot on apricot; angular leaf spot and Fusarium root/stem rot on bean; Pythium root rot on cabbage; Alternaria leaf blight on cantaloupe; Phytophthora blight and anthracnose on pepper; Pythium root rot, early blight, nitrogen and magnesium deficiencies, and tomato spotted wilt virus on tomato.

On ornamentals and turf, we diagnosed Phytophthora blight on petunia; rosette virus on rose; Volutella canker on boxwood; fire blight on flowering pear; scab on crabapple; spot anthracnose on dogwood; anthracnose on oak; Seiridium canker and Cercosporidium needle blight on Leyland cypress; red thread and brown patch on fescue.
